World Percussion Takes Root

Now in its third year, World Percussion finds a true home at John Overton High School.  Directed by Jason Walsh, the John Overton Advanced World Percussion Ensemble was featured recently at the State of Schools address by Dr. Jesse Register.  The advanced class is one of four courses that immerse students in global music and also teaches music basics of notation and counting of rhythms.  World Percussion has been a successful bridge between English Language learners and native English speakers.  Students find common ground as they learn a new non-verbal language of rhythms, accessible to the widely diverse population at Overton high School.  As part of the Music Makes Us initiative, World Percussion is also offered at Whites Creek High School, Oliver, Haynes, Joelton and McMurray Middle Schools.
