Programs
Music education is offered in all zoned and magnet Kindergarten through 12th grade Metro Nashville Public Schools. Elementary music is standards-based and provided during the school day to all students by certified music specialists.
At the middle school level, music instruction is offered at all schools as an elective. Course selection varies from school to school and may include general music, orchestra, chorus, and contemporary courses such as world percussion, mariachi, rock band, and guitar. All zoned middle schools offer band. Classes are taught during the school day and the curricula are standards-based.
High school music courses are co-curricular electives and may fulfill fine arts graduation requirements. Courses include chorus, band, orchestra, concert band, wind ensemble, instrumental techniques, jazz band, percussion ensemble, music understanding, piano, guitar, and music theory. Other course offerings vary by school and may include contemporary courses in world percussion, mariachi, rock band, country/bluegrass, songwriting, hip hop, audio engineering, and music business.
