Through the generosity of the Country artist community, CMA has donated over $7 million to purchase more than 7,000 instruments to Metro Schools, providing equitable access to quality instruments and Metro students a strong reason to stay in school.
The impact of Keep the Music Playing is immeasurable. With over 72% economically disadvantaged students in Metro Schools, a majority of instrumental students in band and orchestra are now playing school-owned instruments purchased with grant funds. Buying or renting an instrument is simply not an option for our students. Orff instruments and digital keyboards are also provided to elementary school through grant support.
When the program began eight years ago, it had been more than 30 years since new instruments had been purchased by Metro Nashville Public Schools. Instruments were shared by multiple students. Changing demographics meant fewer students could afford to purchase or rent instruments. Older instruments were held together with duct tape due to lack of funds for repairs. KTMP contributions also now support an in-house instrument repair facility for the maintenance and repair of these highly-valued instruments.
