Program Activities / Description
Using percussion instruments as a point of departure, the Matrix Percussion Trio brings the study of cultures into your school assembly. “We Are the World: Percussion around the Globe” showcases the music of diverse cultures from around the world, providing an insight into the unique musical aspects of these cultures, and giving a greater understanding of how certain percussion music and instruments have developed as a result of slavery, oppression, and conquest. The children experience music in an interactive setting. We interact with and challenge the children with singing, clapping, and posing questions. In addition to demonstrating instruments and their development, we discuss the development of Jazz music from the cultural “gumbo” of New Orleans. We also teach signature rhythms and discuss and demonstrate the music of Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
