Program Activities / Description
Southern Word mentors walk students through the history of songwriting going from ragtime and jazz to present day rap and hip-hop. Students listen to and analyze various genres of music and learn how to incorporate different stylistic approaches in their own songwriting. Mentors will guide students through the process of writing a song, covering topics such as what is sound and basic music theory. The emphasis of this workshop will be on the writing process, though aspects of music composition will be covered. Mentors will work with the classroom teachers to integrate songwriting workshop with units being covered in class, as well as education standards.
