Program Activities / Description
Finding that spark-Where does inspiration come from? - Brief overview of different styles of music - Brainstorming and free association exercises - What comes first - Music or the words? - Writing from a title - Going fishing - Looking for musical and lyrical hooks Putting the pieces together- the bones of a song - Basic chord structure and progressions, - Simple melody, basic rhyme - Song framework and structure options - Say what you mean and make it rhyme Workshop culminates in the writing of a song or verse (depending on time constraints) by the students that they can perform during the concert at the end of the residency for their hometown peers. For workshops with younger children or a limited timeframe, students will collectively write and improvise over a basic song that they already know. If time and budget allow, intermediate and advanced songwriting, multiple day workshops can be arranged where students will be exposed to a more in depth study of rhyme, rhythm, complex chord progressions, study of word/melody interrelation, lyrical/story development and specific musical styles. If time and budget allow, the student’s song can also be recorded with a portable studio so that each student can leave with a recorded version of their song. This type of involvement gets young people excited about writing and creating and illustrates that anyone can do it, encouraging them to further explore their creativity.
