Program Activities / Description
OGYA creates a new sound through its exceptional styling of original compositions. The lyrics are family-appropriate and enjoyable to all ages. As lead singer, Kofi Mawuko's high energy and extraordinary vocals coupled with the prodigious prowess of the musicians convey such a spirit of abandonment and freedom that everyone wants to express themselves in some fashion as if on FIRE! OGYA has opened for Oliver Mtukudzi, Ruben Studdard, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Sun Ra Arkestra, Jill Scott and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. OGYA is gaining exposure as a “favorite” for public and private functions in the southeast USA. For the most part, the band stays within 5-8 members, but has been known to have as many as 15 musicians, singers and costumed dancers on stage. Its repertoire includes High Life music from Ghana, Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Rock&Roll, Blues and even some Country and Bluegrass, all with a heavy infusion of founder Kofi Mawuko’s afrobeats on his traditional African drums.
