45-50 minutes
Space Requirements
Performance Requirements: •The production requires a performance area at least 24 feet wide and 16 feet deep with a ceiling clearance of at least 9 feet. This is EXTREMELY important this year as the set is rather large. I would encourage that ALL performances happen in the Gym or large cafeteria if at all possible. •If you requested that Nashville Opera bring a keyboard, we will have that, otherwise we will expect the piano to be in the performance space when we arrive. •The performers will need TWO dressing areas near the performance space. We would prefer that they are spaces that are not used by students.

Program Activities / Description
HCA/TriStar and Nashville Opera OnTour present John Davies’ Jack and the Beanstalk, an operatic retelling of the classic children’s fairy tale. In our story, Jack is told to give up his best friend, a cow, to buy food. Disobeying his mother, he trades the cow for magical beans instead and ends up meeting a giant and his wife atop the beanstalk. There he finds out it is the same giant who stole his hen that laid golden eggs! All ends happily when Jack learns a lesson or two and the giant sees the error of his ways and apologizes for being a bully. This opera teaches kids the timeless lesson of “The Golden Rule”. This student friendly 45-minute production is sung in English and set to music from the beloved operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan. We come directly to your school with full sets, costumes, audience interaction, four professional opera singers and a pianist, all members of Nashville Opera’s Mary Ragland Young Artist Program. Participating schools will receive an extensive study guide to prepare for the performance and supplement learning in the classroom. Schools may also request a post-performance Q/A session free of charge. Don't miss this opportunity to introduce opera to your school and experience a live opera performance! Elementary audiences. Offered: February 3– March 17, 2015. Cost: $500 for a single performance/$700 for two back-to-back performances (Limited financial assistance available upon request). Register now! NashvilleOpera.org
