Program Activities / Description
Carolyn German will present a fun, and engaging and fast-paced workshop, where participants will work from their prepared musical theater scene or song. Participants will be able to work their own skills in the musical theater, as well as learning from and supporting their fellow classmates. Participants must bring their own sheet music (we will not work with cd’s for this workshop) from which they will perform and receive encouragement and instruction. While each Performance Workshop differs due to the material the students bring, topics typically highlighted are: the Vocalist vs the Character; Connecting the Voice; Proper Vocal Production; Interpreting Lyrics; Historical Contexts of Language/Lyrics; the Song as Monologue; Elements of Musical Theater History; Character vs Stereotype; Vocal Styles of Musical Theater; Taking Direction; Communicating with the Audience. Topics typically touched on also include: Theatrical Archetypes vs. Social Stereotypes; ; Interpreting Characters; Decision-making; Confidence; Music Theory; Music History. This workshop requires preparation by the students.
