Program Activities / Description
Teaching Artist Carolyn German will present a fun and engaging workshop for participants to learn the best-practices for a musical theatre audition. Students will be encouraged to actively participate by trying the skills taught, under the guidance of Carolyn German and a professional accompanist, (included in the cost of this program). Students will be provided 16 bars of two different songs to try, and one cold-reading scene. This workshop does not require preparation by the students. The exact path of the workshop will depend on the skill level and experience of the participants, but most workshops will touch on a wide variety of topics. Some topics typically addressed are: Theatrical Archetypes vs. Social Stereotypes; Interpreting Lyrics; Historical Contexts of Language/Lyrics; Interpreting Characters; Decision-making; Confidence; Vocal Production; Vocal Interpretation; Music Theory; Music History; Musical Theater History; sight-singing vs. learning by ear; the song as monologue. Topics covered can include: Theatrical Archetypes vs. Social Stereotypes; Interpreting Lyrics; Historical Contexts of Language/Lyrics; Organization; Confidence; Interpreting Characters; Decision-making; Vocal Production; Vocal Interpretation; Music Theory; Music History; Musical Theater History.
