I pursue this work because it allows me an opportunity to share the history, artistry and tradition of the Spiritual and other genres of American music to diverse audiences. This is exciting to me and I have observed the development of a deeper understanding in the students when you make learning fun and interactive. My purpose is to totally engage participants. Jonathan Blanchard received his B. S. Degree in Commercial Music and M. S. Degree in Music Education from Tennessee State University. A strong proponent of arts education Blanchard conducts workshops and residencies in schools and colleges celebrating the artistry history and message of the Negro Spiritual. He performs concerts showcasing his own original works at colleges churches festivals and performing arts venues throughout the United States. Blanchard is a Lincoln Center Teaching Artist. He also serves as a teaching artist for the Tennessee Arkansas and Alabama Arts Commission. Arts integration with core curriculum is the central theme of his work. History Alive- Our Story –The Power of Music School offers musical and historical presentations on the Spiritual music of the Civil Rights Movement and Hip-Hop.
